Food Safety on Meal

Food Safety on Meal
When you order home-cooked food from someone you have never met, food safety is the first question on your mind. At Meal, we take this seriously — because your health is not something we are willing to gamble with.

Our four-layer safety system:

1. Kitchen inspection (before onboarding)
Before any bhabi can start selling on Meal, our field team visits her kitchen for a physical inspection. We check:
- Cleanliness of cooking area, countertops, and utensils
- Proper food storage (refrigeration, dry storage, separation of raw and cooked)
- Clean water supply and handwashing facilities
- Pest control measures
- Adequate ventilation and lighting
- Separate cooking space (not doubling as a bedroom or living area)

Kitchens that do not meet our standards are given specific improvement recommendations and re-inspected within 2 weeks. About 25% of initial applications are deferred until improvements are made.

2. Food handling training
Every approved bhabi completes a 3-hour food safety training covering:
- Personal hygiene during cooking (hair covering, handwashing frequency, no cooking while sick)
- Temperature danger zone (5-60 degrees Celsius — food should not sit in this range)
- Cross-contamination prevention (separate cutting boards for meat and vegetables)
- Proper oil usage (no reusing frying oil more than twice)
- Allergen awareness (common allergens in Bengali cooking: nuts, shrimp, mustard oil)

3. Ongoing quality monitoring
After onboarding, we do not just trust and forget. Our quality system includes:
- Random re-inspections every 3 months
- Customer feedback analysis (flagging patterns like repeated complaints about a specific cook)
- Photo verification: bhabis photograph every order before dispatch
- Temperature checks: delivery partners verify food temperature at pickup

4. Customer protection
- Full refund for any food quality issue reported within 2 hours of delivery
- Instant suspension for any cook receiving a food safety complaint pending investigation
- Emergency helpline for allergic reactions or food poisoning concerns
- Insurance coverage for verified food safety incidents

What we do NOT allow:
- Reheating yesterday's food and selling it as fresh
- Using expired ingredients
- Cooking in quantities beyond the bhabi's capacity (overload causes quality drops)
- Subcontracting to another person without disclosure

Our food safety record:
In 2025-2026, across thousands of orders, we had zero confirmed cases of food poisoning. We had 12 quality complaints (cold food, undercooked items), all resolved within 24 hours with refunds and cook counseling.

Your role in food safety:
- Consume delivered food within 2 hours of delivery
- Refrigerate leftovers immediately
- Report any concerns through the app — even minor ones help us maintain standards
